Prescription Drugs - Frequently Asked Questions
Prescription Medication Ordering Process
Products that require a prescription for purchase will have a red Rx icon: on the product page. Should a prescription item be added to cart, you will be prompted to choose one of the available options to provide us with your prescription during the checkout process. Prescriptions can be submitted by your vet or you can mail in your physical prescription to our mailing address. Once your prescription has been received and verified, your order will be processed and dispatched for shipping.
Please note that the expiry for the medication will be calculated based on the direction of use on the prescription and the amount ordered.
Prescription Medications
Prescription medications are sold as individual units and not by the bottle. Most medication will be shown as per tablet, per capsule, per dose or per chew tab. This information is shown under Type on the product page. Please note that prescription items may not be in their original bottles / packaging as shown on their product page. Prescription medications will be contained in pharmacy bottles regardless of the quantity being ordered.
Pharmacy Dispensing Fee
All prescription drugs are subject to a Dispensing Fee of $7.99 (plus tax, if applicable) per Medication, per Strength (any quantity), per order.
Example: An order with 90 tablets x Deramaxx 25 mg, 100 tablets x Felimazole 2.5 mg , 600 tablets x Felimazole 5.0 mg would be assessed three (3) $7.99 dispensing fees, for a total of $29.97 in prescription dispensing fees (plus tax, if applicable).
Repeats or Refills on Prescriptions
Some long term medications may require repeat prescriptions or otherwise known as refills. A prescription must state the exact number of repeats if it is intended for multiple orders. If the prescription simply states "Repeat" but does not specify how many times it can only be repeated once. Your repeat prescription will be added to your account and can be used until you have reached the total allowance.
Expiry Date of Prescriptions
Prescriptions are typically valid for 12 months from the date of issue unless otherwise explicitly indicated by your veterinarian on the form. Prescriptions must be filled before the expiry in order to be valid. If you have questions or concerns regarding the validity of your prescription, please contact us for more info.
Refrigerated Prescription Medications
Refrigerated products are shipped with ice packs, insulated mailers and / or styrofoam containers on Mondays and Tuesdays only.
We do not guarantee the product will remain in recommended storage temperature on arrival. Pet owners are responsible for monitoring delivery status to ensure timely pick up / retrieval of the order and place back in refrigeration.
For more information regarding shipping, please visit our Shipping & Returns Policy or FAQ page.
Prescription Requirements
We only accept prescriptions from licensed Canadian veterinarians.
Prescriptions must meet all requirements such as but not limited to: vet's name, clinic contact information shown, date and veterinarian signature, drug name, dose, directions, authorized quantity, and if applicable dispense intervals. If required info is missing, it will delay the process of your order.
All prescriptions will be verified for authenticity. It is a criminal offence to forge or alter a prescription. Forgery will be reported to local and federal enforcements. Your account will be terminated immediately and no refunds will be issued.
How To Submit a Prescription
New prescriptions can be submitted to us by veterinarians via fax at 1-866-462-3907, and by email at rx@petsdrugmart.ca.

Your vet can either directly fax us the prescription form or you can mail in the original prescription form to us at the above address. Do not mail in a copy of the prescription.
Prescriptions On File
If you have an existing prescription with Pets Drug Mart, they can be viewed when you login. Under Account → Prescription on File.
You can see total authorized quantity by your vet, how much you have used and how much remaining for refill.
Refills Authorization Requests
If you are out of refills, we can submit a Refill Authorization Request on your behalf to your vet. This request can only be submitted if you have an existing prescription on file with us and it must go to the original prescriber / clinic.
To facilitate, please contact your vet to notify them of the request so they can complete and return the form back to us in a timely manner.
We do not guarantee your vet will respond to the request as they may have clinical concerns which require assessment before authorizing the refill request.
Compound Prescription Medication
Compound medications are individualized medications that are not sold commercially by pharmaceutical companies.
Our compounding pharmacist can create compound medications by combining ingredients in specific strength the patient may require.
See our Compound Medication section for existing compounds that we offer. If you don't see a specific strength or medication on our site, reach out to us by email or phone to inquire.
**Note: Compound Medications are final sale products as they are tailored specific to your pet's needs. These items are non-refundable once they've been processed for shipment. **
