Why could I only get prescriptions from the vet?
Under the Veterinarians Act and College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) regulations, a veterinarian licensed by the College is authorized to prescribe and dispense pet drugs. Most Veterinarians prescribe and dispense the drugs themselves, but the CVO also indicates that: "Once the client is provided with a prescription, it is left to them to decide where they will have the prescription filled." It should be your right to choose where you want to dispense the prescription medications, and your vet should inform you of where it's possible to do that.
Are veterinarians restricted by the College policy from charging a fee for writing a prescription?
Veterinarians can legally charge a reasonable price for writing a prescription, and every vet office may charge differently. The issue is that pharmacies like PetsDrugMart.ca need access to pet medications to be able to fulfill a prescription - this is where we challenge the CVO policy that prevents or strongly discourages vets from selling and supplying pet medications to pharmacies, unless in periods of shortages or crisis.
If I'm outside Ontario, is there anything I can do?
Yes! You are welcome to sign the petition and participate in our email action, but for now all of the recipients of our email campaign and petition are members of the Veterinary College of Ontario or the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. Based on the progress of this action, we may need to file a claim to the federal government and expand our efforts. We will do our best to keep you in the loop!
